With minimum wage being what it is servers often depend on tips to survive. So, it comes as no surprise that some servers get more than a little annoyed when people don’t tip appropriately. This has recently led to a rant by TikToker Ben Raanan, who uploaded a video where he slammed people for poor tip etiquette. His rant is as follows:
“Okay, this is for all you bad tippers out there. If you’re a bad tipper, listen up. Okay, if you don’t know how to tip, I get that. But for your information, $10 is not, like, cute like it used to be. It’s not the 1950s, it’s not the 2000s anymore. Okay, inflation means that $10 is not worth that much anymore. You can’t just leave a cute little $5, a little cute $10 for our server, and think that that’s, like, fun and cute. It’s not fun and cute. Okay, if your bill was like $50, you can leave $10. That’s 20%, that’s fine. If your bill was $200 and you leave me $10, that’s 5%, that’s messed up. That’s an insult. Okay, don’t do that at a restaurant. If you come back to my restaurant after leaving me 5%, honestly even 10%, I’m gonna say something. I’m gonna be like, “Was there a problem with your service last time? Because you tipped 10%, 5%, and that is not a good tip at all.”

How Much Should One Tip? A TikTok Video Went Viral In Its Defense
No surprisingly, the rant blew up on TikTok, with divisive opinions forming rapidly. Some users agreed with Ben. One of them stated, “If you can’t afford to tip 18-20%, you can’t afford to eat out.” While another user mentioned, “Literally when I get 10%, I am like, ‘Okay perfect, I guess I just won’t eat tonight.” Yet another user chimed in with, “Going out to eat is a luxury and service just like getting your nails done, hair, etc. If you can’t afford to tip for a SERVICE get takeout and stay home.”
On the other hand, some thought that the server was angry at the wrong people. One user wrote, “Don’t blame the customers, blame your boss for not paying you what you deserve.” Another user mentioned, “If you go above and beyond more than 20% if you don’t bring me a refill the WHOLE time, I’m there you get nothing I don’t feel bad at all.”
The naysayers led to Ben making another TikTok video in defense of a good tip. “If I’m not entitled to a tip, you’re not entitled to good service. Guess what? You take for granted the nice experience that you have at restaurants. I think most people do. Until you’ve worked a server’s job, I think you truly don’t understand all that extra work.”
