I’m a first-time mum at 53 after 25 years of IVF, I thought my baby bump was a dream

A MUM who spent 25 years trying to get pregnant is in “absolute heaven” after giving birth at 53.

Helen Dalglish, from Glasgow, endured countless failed rounds of IVF, costing almost £100,000, before welcoming her miracle baby into the world.

Daisy Grace, a healthy baby girl, was born in September 2022.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Helen said: “When you get that little miracle at the end, you forget about the 25 years.

“I was looking down and the bump was getting bigger and I thought ‘am I dreaming?’

“Even now looking at her I can’t believe I’m a mum. It’s surreal.”

Helen first started trying for a baby aged 28, while living in Cyprus with her then husband.

After moving back to Scotland, they were diagnosed with “unexplained fertility”.

The couple received one round of free IVF on the NHS before ploughing life savings into more treatment.

A consultant later discovered Helen had a severely tilted womb which had impacted the embryo transfers.

She went on to suffer three heartbreaking miscarriages and even tried donor eggs, which were also unsuccessful.

But Helen, now 54, knew she was destined to be a mother and never gave up on her goal.

She said: “What kept me going was I just kept seeing this baby. I tried to switch it off sometimes and said ‘stop punishing yourself and putting your body through this.’

“Sometimes I would try and accept it, but then I couldn’t.”

It was only after moving back to Cyprus with her current partner that Helen’s dreams came true.

After undergoing treatment at Dunya IVF Clinic in Kyrenia, she was stunned to discover she was pregnant on their second attempt.

Despite a difficult pregnancy which saw her develop diabetes and pre-eclampsia, a condition that causes high blood pressure, Helen gave birth to her miracle tot last year.

She said: “I was very near the deadline at 53. I think at 55 you can’t do any more.

When we came home [from the hospital] I burst out crying. It felt like 25 years of grief trying to escape and caught me at a moment where I wasn’t expecting it.

“It’s absolute heaven. She seems the most placid, laid-back, happy baby. It’s almost like I waited so long and now I’m being spoilt.”
