The 9 ‘Least Attractive’ Male Hobbies, According To Women

Right-wing commentator Liz Wheeler sparked a fierce debate when she posted a graph on X titled “The least attractive hobbies for men according to women.” Top of the list was “playing video games,” and she commented, “This is 100% true. Men playing video games is peak unattractive. Beyond red flag. Like dealbreaker zone. It’s weird that so many dudes don’t get this.” Her post garnered over 19 million views and a lot of backlash. 

Video Games and Other “Unattractive Hobbies”

In follow-up comments, Wheeler clarified her opinion saying, “And obviously we’re not talking about Pac-Man or Tetris or an arcade game once in a while.

X addressed the post, adding an explanation that the graph was created by a TikToker poking fun at themselves for being birdwatchers. Additionally, joke or not, there was no source for the statistics and all of the numbers were implausibly rounded to multiples of five. Wheeler acknowledged this in a video reply saying she had assumed it was a meme and posted it “because it was humorous”. 

In another follow-up tweet, she doubled down, saying video games are “sedentary, consumptive, fantasy steeped in immorality” that negatively affect those who play them. She also clarifies, “It was never an attack on men. I love y’all. That’s why I want you to stop playing video games and laugh at the hilarious meme. I mean, did you see the part about taxidermy?!”

In Defense of Video Games

Nevertheless, the replies are filled with people defending video games, including women. Many people pointed out that there’s nothing wrong with using it to relax at the end of the day, the same way people watch TV. Plus, there is a huge social element involved in many games. In fact, some people stated they had met their life partner through gaming. On the flipside, some women agreed with Wheeler’s take, while others pointed out that many women enjoy video games as well. However, multiple men stated they game for their own enjoyment; they don’t base their hobbies on whether women find them attractive. 

Many comments pointed out the ridiculousness of the meme by putting video games over hobbies such as gambling, online trolling, and taxidermy. 

Taxidermy

Taxidermy is the act of preserving the head or body of an animal. It’s often done to memorialize a successful hunt, and it involves preparing and stuffing the animal to make it look alive for a display. Many museums use this technique to educate people about different species. People who do taxidermy may see it as a form of art that captures the spirit of the animal and preserves its story. Plus, it’s not wasteful since a hunter can consume the meat and use the remains for a memorable display. However, many people dislike the practice because they see it as unethical. Additionally, many find the idea too disturbing and macabre. 

Gambling

Gambling is a hobby with many potential downsides, such as addiction, poor mental health, and major financial loss. Gambling can include participating in poker, the lottery, scratch cards, and sports betting. However, people who gamble don’t necessarily have an addiction, especially if they do it infrequently and can stop when the odds are off. 

Online trolling

Trolling is the act of posting or commenting on the internet with the intention to upset others. Trolls post inflammatory things they may not believe in order to cause drama. Sometimes they’ll troll people with different views to try to discredit or embarrass them. When they do get a rise out of their target, trolls may downplay their words, saying it was just a joke or the person is too sensitive. Trolls generally use anonymous accounts to escape consequences and accountability.

Magic tricks

In many TV shows and movies, guys who do magic tricks are depicted as nerdy and unappealing. In real life? There’s no scientific evidence to confirm or disprove it. However, like with most things, it’s a matter of taste. Some women enjoy magic tricks, some hate them, some like certain tricks over others, and some don’t care either way. 

Collecting figurines and comic books

Figurines and comic books are often classified as childish, so adults who collect them are also deemed immature. People may also dislike collectors in general, calling the hobby materialistic and wasteful. However, people get a lot of value from this type of hobby. They could be motivated by nostalgia, an appreciation of art, future investments, or simply because the items “spark joy”. 

Building model trains

Hollywood has also deemed building model trains as nerdy, childish, and unattractive. However, the stigma has lessened over the years. In fact, many people like to hear about niche interests, especially when there is an aesthetically pleasing result. Social media has helped introduce individuals to many hobbies they wouldn’t have heard about otherwise, and model trains fit right in.

Birdwatching 

Some comments came to the defense of birdwatching under Liz Wheeler’s post. Often people think of old, slow-talking men when they discuss this hobby, but the act itself isn’t unattractive, maybe boring, and not for everyone. But keep in mind, that romantic partners don’t have to share the same hobbies. If they are truly interested in each other, they’d appreciate each other’s interests because they like seeing their partners happy.
