Shropshire Cat Rescue in Shrewsbury is making a meaningful impact on the lives of abandoned, stray, and unwanted felines through a compassionate and specialized rescue initiative. A Retirement Home for Senior Cats
At the heart of this mission is Moggies Retirement Village, a tranquil sanctuary where 17 elderly cats, previously surrendered or found wandering in their golden years, now live in comfort and security. Volunteers play an essential role in their care, ensuring they receive daily attention, medical monitoring, and enrichment activities. One particularly heartwarming initiative involves local children visiting the village each month to read to the cats, providing both socialization and soothing companionship.
A video showcasing the gated retirement community reveals a series of miniature cottages set within well-maintained gardens, each housing up to two cats. These cozy dwellings are fully equipped with beds, litter trays, food and water bowls, and an assortment of toys. In addition to individual cottages, the facility features Moggie’s Mansion, a communal space with larger beds and play structures where the cats can socialize in a comfortable indoor environment.
Providing Comfort and Veterinary Care
The sanctuary was established to accommodate elderly felines or those with chronic medical conditions requiring ongoing care. Volunteer veterinarian Susie explains that this initiative provides a solution for individuals who, due to circumstances such as transitioning into assisted living, can no longer keep their senior pets. By offering a permanent home, the rescue alleviates the stress of rehoming elderly cats, allowing them to spend their final years in a stable and nurturing environment.
Adjusting to life in the retirement village can be challenging for older cats, as they often struggle with change. To ease the transition, newcomers are initially kept in a single cottage for approximately two weeks, allowing them to acclimate to their surroundings before integrating into the wider community. Regular health checks are a fundamental part of the program, with each cat being weighed weekly to monitor for any signs of illness or distress. Any concerns are promptly addressed, ensuring the highest level of veterinary care.
Volunteers dedicate themselves to the well-being of these senior felines year-round, braving all weather conditions to provide daily care and companionship. Their commitment extends beyond the cats’ lifetimes, as the sanctuary also honors those who have passed away by creating personalized memorial stones. While some of the elderly cats are eventually rehomed, many remain in the village for the rest of their lives, receiving the love and security they deserve.
